A Child’s Career Choice

Parents should help their children choose a career but not choose the job for them. Parents can help facilitate that decision by paying attention to the details. The details are what you find your children to be good at as they grow. Once you know what they are good at, you should guide them in that direction. Ultimately a child’s career choice should be their own.

Parents have a responsibility to nurture children in all activities while they are growing, and when they find they are gifted in a particular area, guide them and support them in that area. Allow them to take part in leadership positions involving their gift or talent. Help them see for themselves the areas they are good at, so it is easier to choose a career.

Once your child has chosen a career, you should not make them feel guilty about their decision. As parents, you may not agree with their decision, but the choice is ultimately theirs to make. Parents can not relive their life through their children, so support their decision and help them out in any way you can. You can’t make them choose a career that you wished you had chosen.

College isn’t for everyone, so if your child chooses not to go to college and picks a trade because they are better with their hands, that is okay. The world needs everyone in every field possible. They should strive for excellence in their career, and having supportive parents is always helpful. Encourage your children to be the best in whatever career choice they make.Â
